The best thing about this park is its location. We wanted easy access to Shenandoah National Park and for us, this was terrific. We were about 7+ miles from the middle entrance to the park, so we got lots of hiking and sightseeing in. Unfortunately, the only good thing about the park is the location. Family owned for the last 20 years, they are woefully behind on basic care. The roads after the entrance are bad, and need a lot of work. Trees need trimming. We could not believe people actually paid to stay in their caboose/railcar rooms. One of these units is a complete wreck with tons of trash and junk around. You can camp - seriously camp as in a tent - among the trees. You definitely are in the woods. As in roughing it. It is quiet there, the birds are fantastic with a symphony every morning. The park is about 20 miles north of Charlottesville so we also visited Monticello and Montpelier - both easy and very pleasant drives from the park. The surrounding countryside and scenery is almost pastoral. Such beautiful country. The park had a pool that was used a lot, but we would not chance it despite pretty warm weather. We are easily discouraged by run-down parks lacking in basic maintenance.
